How do I connect Google for a project, with my account or my customer's?

Short answerConnect Google in Settings → Connections → This project covers Search Console, Google Analytics and Business Profile: use your primary Google account, let the customer sign in with Google on the spot, or send them a link to the Google connector page. Disconnect and reconnect any service, and nobody is ever asked for a password.

Your primary Google account

Your workspace has one primary Google account: usually your own or your agency's. Connect it once under Settings → Connections → Whole workspace (Connect my Google account). It is shown once, with its picture and e-mail. Google often lists the Business Profile "location groups" a login belongs to; they are shown as a count under that one account, never as more accounts. If you need a second account, use Add another Google account: it is listed apart, under Other Google accounts, and never mixed into a project's choices. Make primary swaps them.

In each project, Use my Google account lists the primary account's Search Console sites, Analytics properties and Business Profile locations, with the ones for the project's website first.

Your customer's own Google account

When the property is in the customer's Google account, not yours:

  • Customer signs in now: they are with you. The Google connector page opens on this computer and Google asks them to choose their account.
  • Send the customer a link: an e-mail with numbered steps (open a browser, sign in to the Google account that manages the Business Profile and the website's Search Console and Analytics, press the button, press Connect, choose what to share and press Allow, then Done). Their name and a note are optional; the preview shows the e-mail before you send it. The link works for 7 days (an admin setting), once, for this project only, and you can Cancel link or Resend it.

On the connector page the customer sees your agency's and project's names, what access is given and how to withdraw it, and one Connect button. They sign in on Google's own page. The connector then finds their Search Console sites, Analytics properties and (if they tick Also share my Business Profile) Business Profile locations, ticks the ones for your website, and they press Share. Only what they tick is used; anything else is given back to Google. Your panel shows Connected by … just now without a refresh, and you are told in the bell and by e-mail.

Or they add you as a user or Manager

On the same page the customer can choose I'd rather add you as a user or Manager. The steps (also in your panel, with Copy the steps):

  • Search Console: Settings → Users and permissions → Add user, enter your primary account's e-mail, choose Full permission.
  • Google Analytics: Admin → Property access management → + → Add users, choose the Viewer (or Analyst) role.
  • Business Profile: Business Profile settings → People and access → Add, choose Manager, then Invite.

The project then shows Waiting for the customer. Press Check now once they say it is done: the properties your account can now see for the website are listed with Use it. The steps are the same whatever your website's platform: Google's services do not depend on it. The wording of the steps and the e-mail address customers add are admin settings.

Disconnect, reconnect and switch account

Each service has Disconnect. It asks first and says what stops: the daily import ends and the project no longer reads that property. Tick Delete imported data to remove the figures, history and Day 0 too; otherwise they are kept, and choosing the same property again continues them. For Business Profile the location leaves the project; Google's copies of its reviews, posts and figures are removed as Google's rules require, and what you made in SEOmise stays. When the connection was the customer's own and no other project uses it, the access is also given back to Google (revoked).

Reconnect shows the three choices again. Switch account moves a service to another account, for example from your primary account to the customer's own; the same property keeps its history.

Your primary account also has Disconnect (it names the projects that use it first) and Reconnect under Settings → Connections → Whole workspace.

Why we never ask for a password

Google forbids sharing passwords, and a password would give anyone who holds it everything in the account. Nobody at SEOmise or at your agency needs it: the customer either signs in on Google's own page and chooses what to share, or adds your Google account as a user or Manager. There is no password field anywhere in SEOmise for this. If anyone asks your customer for their Google password, they should refuse.

Who can do this

People who manage the project's data (owners, admins and SEO managers) connect and disconnect; people limited to some projects only touch theirs. Someone viewing as you sees the states but cannot change them.
