What do share of voice and position history show?

Short answerSearch & keywords → Positions has two more tabs. Share of voice shows your share of the clicks your tracked searches can bring against every other website in the first results, as a leaderboard with your tracked competitors marked and a trend over time. Position history shows how many searches sat in each position group on each day, and the share in the top 10, for all searches or one tag. Both come from checks already made, so opening them costs nothing.

Share of voice

Open Search & keywords → Positions and choose Share of voice.

Each rank check records the websites listed in the first places of the results (20 by default). For every tracked search, each of those websites gets the usual share of clicks for its place, times the search's monthly searches. A website's share of voice is its share of all those expected clicks.

  • Your share of voice, with its change over the period and your place among the websites.
  • Who gets the clicks: the websites with the largest share, yours always included, and the competitors you track marked as such. A sub-domain of a competitor counts as that competitor.
  • Share of voice over time: your line and those of your largest tracked competitors (three by default), one point per day with checks, each search's newest check carried forward.

Searches without a known monthly volume are left out; when none has one, every search counts the same and the screen says so. Places are counted per website (a website listed twice keeps its first place), so they can sit a place higher than Google's own count. It is an estimate, not your real clicks.

Share of voice starts with the first rank check that records the results' websites; until then the tab says so.

Position history

Choose Position history for one stacked column per day: the searches checked that day in first place, places 2–3, 4–5, 6–10, 11–30 and 31–100, and those further down or not found. Below it, the share in the top 10 per day, with its change over the period. Show table lists the numbers.

Filters

Both tabs can show all searches or one tag (tags are set on Positions, for example by service or by area) and a period (the past 7, 30, 60 or 90 days, the previous month or all time).

Good to know

  • It works the same for any website platform: it comes from Google's results, not from your site.
  • Staff choose the number of places counted, the websites listed, the competitors drawn, how many checks are read, the click share per place and the position groups.
