Where do my links sit: content, menus or footer?

Short answerEach scan records where on the page every internal link sits: in the content, a menu, the footer, the header, a sidebar or the breadcrumbs. See the magic draws each kind of line differently, lets you show only the links in some places (such as only the content links), and counts every page's links in and out by place.

Updated 31 October 2026

Menus and footers link every page to the same few pages, so the internal linking that really helps a page is the links in your content. SEOmise's scan reads where each link sits from the page's own code, on every platform:

  • Content: the main part of the page (inside main or article), and anything outside the parts below.
  • Navigation: a menu (nav, role navigation, or the menu classes of WordPress, Elementor, Divi and other themes). A menu inside the header is navigation.
  • Header: the rest of the page header, such as the logo link.
  • Footer: the page footer, menus in it included.
  • Sidebar and Breadcrumb: sidebars and widget areas, and breadcrumb trails.

A page that links to another from several places keeps every place. Only what the code says counts; nothing is guessed. Your administrator can add the class names a theme uses for its menus, header, footer, sidebar or breadcrumbs (Settings → Policies → Website scan checks).

On the map

Open See the magic → Visualize. A solid line is a content link, a dashed line a menu link, a dotted line a footer link, and a thin, faint line a header, sidebar or breadcrumb link (your administrator can change these styles). A pair of pages linked from the content and a menu is drawn as a content link. The legend at the bottom left of the map shows each line when Lines is on Links.

  • Point at a line to see where it goes and where it sits, for example "Home → Contact · Navigation, Footer · anchor 'Contact us'".
  • Filters → Links by place: switch on Content, Navigation, Footer, Header, Sidebar or Breadcrumb to draw only those links, with how many there are of each. Only content links shows your real internal linking without the menus. A saved view keeps the choice.
  • Click a page: Where its links sit in its panel counts its links in and out by place ("12 from navigation, 3 from content, 30 from the footer"), and each link in its lists names its place. When only the menu and footer link to a page, the panel says so: a link from your content helps it more.

Older scans

Scans made before this was recorded show "Not recorded (scan again)" instead of a guess. Scan the website again to see where its links sit.

Addresses with a question mark

See the magic's Sections never counts an address with ? as the home page. A page builder's saved designs (Elementor's /?elementor_library=…, Divi, Beaver Builder, Bricks, Oxygen and WPBakery templates) are grouped as Page builder templates: saved designs from your page builder that should not be public pages. Any other address with ? is a Query address, usually a duplicate or a filter. A template that opens to the public and may be indexed is listed under Issues as "Page builder templates open to the public", with the steps to set it to noindex or redirect it. Your administrator keeps the list of template types.
