How does the accessibility check and fix work?
Short answerIt checks every page of your website scan for common WCAG 2.1 AA problems, explains each one in plain words, fixes the safe ones through your connector after approval or gives the steps for your platform, and drafts an accessibility statement.
Run the check
- Open Tools → Accessibility check & fix. If it is not in your plan yet, you can add it from Workspace → Store.
- Press Check the website. This starts a scan of your website, and each page is checked as it is read. It takes a few minutes; you can leave the page.
After that, every scan of your website is checked too.
What it looks for
Images without alt text, links and buttons with no name, form fields without a label, the page language, skipped heading levels, the page title, repeated ids, custom tab order, media that plays by itself, colour contrast (where the page sets its colours), zoom blocked on phones, embedded frames without a title, data tables without headers, unknown ARIA roles and hidden content that can still be focused. A missing "skip to content" link is given as advice.
Each problem has a plain explanation, the WCAG criterion and how to fix it. Problems are Critical, Serious, Moderate or Minor; Advice is not scored.
The score and alerts
Each page starts at 100 and loses points for each kind of problem, more for serious ones. The site score is the average of your pages. Switch on E-mail me when a scan finds new problems to hear about new ones.
Fix it
Under Fix it, check Your website runs on, so the steps match your site.
- With a connector, the site-wide fixes (page language, zoom on phones, titles for embedded frames, labels for links with no text) go to Plan & changes → Changes for approval, and can be undone.
- With the PHP connector file, download the fixes file and upload it next to the connector.
- On other platforms, follow the steps, copy the change, then press Mark as done. The next scan checks each one.
For alt text, press Suggest from file names or Write them with AI, check every suggestion, then Create the change, or Save as a spreadsheet (CSV) to paste them into your site. After fixing something by hand, Check this page again checks one page straight away.
Statement and report
Statement drafts an accessibility statement from your answers. Report (PDF) downloads the results.
The check finds common problems in the page code. It does not make a website compliant on its own, and only an expert review of the whole site can show full conformance.
