How do I track positions on Bing, Yahoo and Google Maps?

Short answerPositions has an engine switch: Google, Bing, Yahoo, Google Maps and Best of all. Turn on Bing or Yahoo for one of your Google markets under "Search engines and Google Maps" on the same page; before it is turned on you see the checks a month it adds, included in your plan. Choose which searches each business location checks on Google Maps. Checks run weekly (daily where your plan includes it), and drops raise ranking alerts.

About Keywords and rankings: a rank tracker: see where you show up on Google, and which searches to go after

Turn on Bing or Yahoo

Open Analyse → Keywords → Positions and go to Search engines and Google Maps. Each of your Google markets lists Bing and Yahoo:

  • press Turn on Bing (or Yahoo). A question first says how many searches will be checked, how often, and about how many checks a month that is. Scheduled checks are included in your plan: no credits are taken;
  • the same searches as the Google market are checked, in the same language and on the same device. By default each search is made for the market's country, because Bing and Yahoo have their own lists of places;
  • choose Weekly or Daily (daily only where your plan includes it), Pause or Resume, or Remove it (its positions and their history go with it).

Your plan sets how many search engines a project can use, Google included, and how often they may be checked.

Switch between engines

At the top of Positions the engine switch shows:

  • Bing or Yahoo: each search's position, its change since the check before, the best seen and the page that ranks, with key figures (top 10 with its change, top 3, searches found, average position) and Export;
  • Google Maps: each business location's searches and their place in the Maps list;
  • Best of all: one row per search with its position on every engine and which one shows it best.

A search marked not checked could not be read last time (for example the answer was for another search); it is tried again at the next check and never counted as not found.

Google Maps positions per location

Under Search engines and Google Maps, each business location (a connected Business Profile or one added by hand) has Choose searches: pick up to the number your plan and the platform allow. Each search is checked at the business's own map point. The business is recognised by its Google place, its business id, its website with its name, then its website or name alone.

A map grid scan of the same location from the last day already answered the search at its centre point, so that answer is used and nothing is bought. The Map rank grid screen shows the location's Maps positions too, and a location without grid scans gets its share of map top 3 from these checks.

While the search data is not connected

The screens say Waiting for the search data connection. Your settings are kept, nothing is lost, and the first checks run once it is connected.

Check by hand, on any platform

Positions are read from the search engines, not from your website, so they work the same on WordPress, Laravel, any other platform and sites without a connector. To check one yourself: open a private browser window, set the search engine's country to the market's, search the exact words and count the ordinary results (ads aside) down to your site. For Google Maps, move the map to your business first. Export downloads the figures as a spreadsheet.

In your alerts and reports

  • A big drop on Bing or Yahoo becomes a recommendation and a line in the ranking alert e-mail, named by the engine, with the project's own drop threshold.
  • The client update e-mail and Proof of Progress show the searches in the top 10 on each engine at the start of the period and now.
  • In the Reports centre, Keyword rankings and movers has a Bing and Yahoo table (each engine's searches, average position, top 10, moved up and down) and Local visibility on the map grid a Google Maps positions table (each location and search at the start and now).
  • The monthly owner digest counts the searches that moved up on Bing, Yahoo and Google Maps after Google's.
