How do you know how my hosting company performs, and is my data used?

Short answerSEOmise checks thousands of websites for uptime. It works out which hosting company each one is on and builds anonymous figures per hosting company: uptime, outages and answer times. A figure appears only when enough separate businesses and sites contribute, and no single website or customer can be recognised.

Where you see it

  • Site health → Your hosting on each project: your website's own uptime and answer time, measured by Website watch, beside the figures for other sites on the same hosting company.
  • The free SEO audit: a line under "Where and how it's hosted", such as "Sites on Hetzner we monitor: 99.95% up over 90 days, median answer 380 ms; yours answered in 1,501 ms". It is never part of the grade.
  • The in-app SEO audit: when Website watch measures your website, your own uptime over the last 30 days is shown as a check, "Uptime (our checks)" (below 99% it warns, below 98% it fails, by default). It is a notice that does not change the grade unless our team switches on "Hosting uptime in the grade". Without measurements there is no check: nothing is estimated.

Where the figures come from

Only from SEOmise's own checks, never from outside ratings:

  • Website watch checks each watched website every five minutes and confirms a failure with a second attempt before it counts as down.
  • The Publisher Network checks every member website's home page on its own schedule.

Each day SEOmise adds up, per website, how many checks found it up or down, its median answer time and its outages, and builds the figures for each hosting company over the last 30 and 90 days.

How SEOmise knows who hosts a website

From what it already knows, in this order: Domain health's check of the domain, the network your website's server sends from (seen by the SEOmise connector on WordPress, Laravel or any PHP site), the network your website's address belongs to (asked of the internet registries), the free audit's record and the domain's name servers. Behind a delivery network such as Cloudflare the address does not say who hosts the site, so it stays Unknown unless the connector or Domain health names the real host. Our team can correct a mapping.

Privacy

  • Your own figures are shown only to your workspace. Other customers never see your website, its uptime or that you are a customer.
  • A hosting company's figures appear only when enough separate businesses (ten by default) and websites (twenty by default) contribute, no single business makes up too large a share, and a little random noise is added. An agency and its clients count as one business. Below that the figure is simply not shown.
  • Public pages show a range of websites ("50 to 99 sites"), never an exact count.
  • Only availability and answer times are used: never your visitors, your content or anyone's contact details.
  • Our terms and privacy notice allow anonymous, aggregated statistics. A workspace owner can leave pooled use under Account; your websites then leave the figures at the next daily build.

When there is no figure

  • Not measured under "Your uptime": turn on Website watch for the project. Your figure appears after a week of checks.
  • Not measured under your host's figures: too few businesses or websites on that hosting company yet.
  • Hosting company not known yet: see the reason behind the ⓘ; connecting the site helps when a delivery network is in front of it.
