How do I put the Google Analytics tag on my website?

Short answerConnect Google Analytics under Settings → Connections → This project. The Google tag panel below it reads your property's web stream and checks your home page first. With a site connector, press "Install the Google tag on <your site>": it waits for approval in Changes and can be undone. Without one, copy Google's snippet and follow the steps for your platform, then press "Check the site".

About Google data: a Search Console dashboard with your Analytics figures, imported every day

Updated 27 October 2026

Once Google Analytics is connected for a project (Settings → Connections → This project, or the Google data step when you add a website), a Google tag on panel appears under it. Managing it needs the Owner, Admin or SEO manager role (anyone who may manage the project's data); everyone else on the project can see it.

What is checked first

  • The measurement ID: read from your Google Analytics property's web data stream (the "G-…" ID Google shows under Admin → Data streams). Reading it uses the read-only access you already gave; nothing is changed in Google Analytics. If the property has no web stream, the panel says so; if it has several, choose the one for this website.
  • Your home page: read as a first-time visitor sees it, to find a Google tag already there, so a second one never goes on unasked:
    • Tag found on the site with where it was found: nothing to install.
    • Another GA4 tag found (G-…): a different ID is already there. Keep it, or choose Add … as well. Two tags for the same property count every visit twice.
    • Google Tag Manager found (GTM-…): your Analytics tag may already be set up inside the container, which cannot be seen from the page. Check Tag Manager first.
    • An old Universal Analytics tag (UA-…) is pointed out: Google no longer processes its data.

Install it through your site connector

With the WordPress, Laravel or PHP connector paired (and recent enough), press Install the Google tag on . It becomes a change like every other: it waits for approval in Changes, is logged, and can be undone there. If you may approve and publish changes, Approve and install now does both at once, after a confirmation. Only the measurement ID is sent to your site; the connector writes Google's own snippet itself (on WordPress with WordPress's own script functions). Nothing else can be sent this way.

After the change is on the site, the home page is read again: Tag found on the site, or the reason (often a page cache still sending the old page). It is read again a few minutes later, a few times; Check the site reads it at once.

Remove the tag takes off the tag your connector placed, through the same approval in Changes.

Where your site is in the EEA, or a consent tool (Cookiebot, OneTrust, Complianz and others) is found on the home page, the panel shows Google's consent mode note and Load the tag with Google's consent mode defaults set to "denied" (ticked for EEA sites by default). The tag then sets no Analytics or advertising cookies until your consent tool tells Google the visitor agreed: ad_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization and analytics_storage all start as "denied". Make sure your consent tool sends Google's consent update; without it, Analytics measures much less. If your site already sets Google's consent mode defaults, they are not set a second time.

Without a connector

On Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and every other platform (or with an older connector), the panel shows Google's exact snippet with Copy the tag and the steps for your platform, for example your theme's header or a plugin on WordPress, layout/theme.liquid on Shopify, or Custom code on Wix. Paste it once, in the head of every page. Then press Check the site.

While installing through the connector is switched off for your workspace, the panel shows Beta with Ask for early access; the snippet and the steps work for everyone.
