How do SEO tests and results work?
Short answerPlan & changes → SEO tests measures every change that reached your website after two, four and eight weeks (Search Console on the changed pages, tracked ranks and the SEO score) and says how strong the evidence is. An SEO test changes the titles or descriptions of some pages and keeps similar pages as they are, then reports the difference with its confidence.
SEO tests is under Plan & changes in each project.
What your changes did
Every change that reached your site and passed its check is measured, on any platform and route. Each window (two, four and eight weeks) compares the same number of days after the change with the days before:
- Search Console (where connected): clicks, impressions, click rate and average position of the changed pages;
- tracked ranks of the searches those pages ranked for;
- the SEO score.
Each result is better, no clear change or worse, with an evidence label:
- One reading: too little data; never counted as a result.
- Before and after.
- Compared with similar sites: minus the change seen across similar sites in the same months (anonymous pooled figures only, never your Search Console or Analytics data).
- Controlled test: an SEO test, below.
A result is flagged when a search engine update, or another change to the same pages, falls in the same weeks.
Run an SEO test
- Switch tests on for the website (it needs Search Console).
- Press New test: name, your idea (hypothesis), what changes (titles, descriptions or both), how to measure (clicks or impressions) and the length.
- Choose the pages, and write the new text with
{title}and{description}standing for each page's current text. - SEOmise splits the pages into two similar groups: one changes, the other stays as it is. Shuffle draws again.
- The changes go out as an ordinary change set, through the site connector or as steps to follow by hand, and are measured over the test.
At the end you see the difference between the groups and how sure the result is. Your plan sets how many tests may run at once.
