How does signing in with a two-step code work?

Short answerAfter your password, type the 6-digit code from your authenticator app. The sixth digit sends it by itself, so there is nothing to press. No phone to hand? Use a recovery code, or ask for a one-time code by e-mail.

Updated 14 October 2026

Enter the code

  1. Sign in with your e-mail address (or username) and password.
  2. The Two-step sign-in page opens. Type the 6-digit code from your app.
  3. As soon as the sixth digit is in, the code is checked and you are signed in. Pasting the code, or your phone's code autofill, fills every box at once.

Want to skip the code on this browser next time? Tick Remember this device before you type the last digit.

Each code works only once.

Codes by text message

If your account uses text messages, we text you a code that lasts 10 minutes. Press Send a new text if it does not arrive (one a minute).

Other ways in

  • Use a recovery code: one of the codes you saved when you turned on two-step sign-in.
  • E-mail me a one-time code: a code to your sign-in address, when it is offered.
  • None of these? Recover my account: when you have no app, no phone and no recovery codes.

A wrong code

The boxes clear, and you may have to wait before the next try; the page counts down. When you have three tries or fewer left before the account locks, the page says so. By default, wrong codes and wrong passwords count together.

On a remembered device

A device you chose to remember skips the code. If "Keep me signed in" brought you back, the page carries on by itself.
