How do Speed fixes make my website faster?
Short answerSpeed fixes loads your home page and most visited pages like a phone would, then offers up to six fixes. With the WordPress or Laravel connector SEOmise applies them after approval and can undo them; on other platforms you get the steps and smaller images to upload.
Start
- Open Tools → Speed fixes. If it is not in your plan yet, you can add it from Workspace → Store.
- Press Scan my website. It takes a minute or two and finds out which platform your site runs on.
The six fixes
- Make images smaller. Large photos are the most common reason a page is slow on a phone. Images are compressed, with a WebP copy next to them, and the originals are kept.
- Serve the WebP copies to every browser that takes them.
- Lazy loading and image sizes. Images and videos further down load only when a visitor scrolls near them, and every image keeps its space so the page does not jump.
- Defer scripts that hold up the page. Optional, and off unless you switch it on: it can break menus, sliders, forms or tracking on some sites. jQuery is never deferred, and you can list scripts to leave alone. Check your important pages straight after.
- Browser caching and compression. Visitors' browsers keep your images, styles and scripts, and text files travel compressed. Hosted platforms do this for you.
- Preconnect and preload hints, so the browser starts early on the other sites a page needs and on its main image.
Each fix shows what the scan found, which Core Web Vital it helps, and a status: Worth doing, Optional, Done, Nothing to do, Later (another fix comes first) or Not checked.
With a connector (WordPress or Laravel)
- Press Prepare this fix. For images, press Make the next … images smaller, choosing the quality first.
- Press Approve and apply. If your role cannot publish, the button says Approve, and someone who can publish presses Apply to the site.
- SEOmise applies the fix and checks it on the live page. Undo puts your site back to how it was.
Deferring scripts and the caching and compression rules are high risk, so an owner or admin approves them. Five minutes after a fix goes live, SEOmise tests your home page's PageSpeed again.
On other platforms
Each fix comes with the steps for your platform and code to copy. You can download smaller copies of the images on your pages to upload in place of the originals. On other PHP sites, you can download the PHP connector file with the speed settings filled in.
After a fix made by hand, press Scan again and Measure now.
The PageSpeed score
The top of the screen shows your home page's PageSpeed score for phones and computers, before and after, with how fast the main content appears, how much the page jumps and how long it is too busy to respond. Measure now runs a new test. Your plan may limit how many tests you can run each month; the screen shows how many are left.
