Connecting WordPress didn't work. What can I do?

Short answerSEOmise names the problem and the fix. The usual causes are a WordPress user who is not an Administrator, a security plugin blocking the connection, application passwords switched off, or a site without https.

Updated 14 October 2026

When connecting fails, SEOmise shows what went wrong and a Try again button. Here are the messages and what to do.

"You need to be a WordPress administrator" or "WordPress refused the request"

The WordPress account you used is not an Administrator, or the approval was withdrawn. Sign in to WordPress as an Administrator (usually the person or agency who built your site) and press Try again. Or download the plugin and give it to your administrator.

"A security plugin is blocking the connection"

Your site's REST API is switched off or blocked, often by a security plugin such as Wordfence, Solid Security or Disable REST API. Allow the REST API for logged-in users, then press Try again. Or upload the plugin yourself (see below).

WordPress says "Application passwords are not available"

A security plugin or your host switched them off. Turn them back on (in Wordfence: Login Security → Settings), or upload the plugin yourself.

"We couldn't reach your site"

Check your site loads in a new tab. If you use a firewall such as Cloudflare, Sucuri or your host's, allow requests from SEOmise, then try again.

"Your site isn't on https yet"

WordPress only gives the one-click approval over https, and the connector only pairs over https. Turn on https (most hosts offer a free certificate in their control panel), then try again.

"One upload needed"

WordPress needs the plugin uploaded once. Download it, then go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the file, press Install Now and Activate. It connects itself within a minute.

"The plugin on your site is too old"

Download the current plugin and upload it in WordPress, replacing the old one. Then try again.

"The plugin could not connect itself"

Press Try again. If it keeps failing, open SEOmise in the WordPress sidebar and press Connect to SEOmise.

"A different site answered"

WordPress approved the connection for another address. Check you approved on the right site, then try again.

"You didn't approve the connection"

Nothing was changed. Press Try again and choose Yes, I approve of this connection.

Upload the plugin yourself

Download your personal plugin from Settings → Install guide → WordPress, upload it under Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin and activate it. It connects itself for 48 hours after the download.
